         La mer
Qu'on voit danser le long des golfes clairs
A de
s reflets d'argent
         La mer
Des reflets changeants
Sous la pluie

         La mer
Au ciel d'été confond
Ses blancs moutons
Avec les anges si purs
La m
er bergere d'azur
Infinie

         Voyez
Pres des étangs
Ces grands roseaux mouillés
         Voyez
Ces oiseaux blancs
Et ces maisons rouillées

         La mer
Les a
bercés
Le long des golfes clairs
Et d'une chanson d'amour
         La mer
A bercé mon cœur pour la vie

Somewhere beyond the sea,
Somewhere, waiting for me,
My l
over stands on golden sands
And watches the ships that go sailing;

Somewhere beyond the sea,
He's (
She's) there watching for me.
If I could fly like birds on high,
Then s
traight to his (her) arms I'd go sailing.

It's far beyond a star,
It's near beyond the moon,
I kno
w beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon.

We'll meet beyond the shore,
We'll kiss just as before.
Happy we'll be beyond the sea,
And never again I'll go sailing!

Charles Trenet's  song 'La Mer', which according to the legend he had composed with Leo Chauliac on a train in 1943, was recorded in 1946.

                   Jack Lawrence

It was immediately translated into English by  Jack Lawrence and became 'Beyond the sea'.
It was a
smashing success in the English-speaking world where it became a classic.
About 4000 covers were made of 'La Mer' across the world.

For all th
e craftsmanship of Lawrence and Trenet, "Beyond The Sea" was not an instant hit in America. The early recordings were surprisingly heavy.
Benny G
oodman recorded it with a string orchestra in 1947 and Tex Beneke cut it with his Glenn Miller orchestra.
(An air check survives of Beneke playing it with Ronnie Deauville, a crooner who was almost impossible to distinguish from the young Sinatra.
This track has been circulated by collectors as a Miller-Sinatra recording). For ten years or so the song lay dormant.

performed by:      ... Royal Crown Revue; Kevin Spacey; Frank Sinatra; Bobby Darin; Robbie Williams ...
